Threonine is an essential amino acid. It is an important residue of many proteins, such as tooth enamel, collagen, and elastin. An important amino acid for the nervous system, that also plays an important role in fat metabolism and prevents fat build-up in the liver. Useful with intestinal disorders and indigestion, it has also been used to alleviate anxiety and mild depression.

Threonine is an immunostimulant and can promote cell immune defence function. This amino acid has been useful in the treatment of genetic spasticity disorders and multiple sclerosis at a dose of 1 gram daily. Used to treat various nervous system disorders including spinal spasticity, multiple sclerosis, familial spastic paraparesis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease). L-Threonine is an essential amino acid. The “essential” amino acids are those that cannot be made by the body and must be obtained from the diet. It is important for the formation of collagen, elastin, and tooth enamel, and aids liver and lipotropic function when combined with aspartic acid and methionine.
